Simmons establishes scholarship to honor family


As a youngster growing up in Big Stone Gap, Rabern Simmons always knew he would attend The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. 

It was a family tradition, one that his parents, Barry Simmons ’91 and the late Rae Simms ’76, established in the mid 1970s. Simmons’ connection to campus would grow stronger over the years, but it began when the young boy would accompany his parents to various alumni events. 

Valentine Dance rescheduled

The Valentine Dance that was set for Feb. 14 has been rescheduled for Feb.18 at 6 pm at Cantrell Hall.

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony postponed

The UVa-Wise Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony that was set for Saturday, Feb. 15, has been postponed due to weather. The event will be rescheduled for later in the year. However, the basketball games between UVa-Wise and the University of Charleston are still scheduled for Saturday. The women's game begins at 2, followed by the men's matchup at 4 p.m.

Scholarship established in memory of late school superintendent

The family of the late Michael G. Basham, a longtime educator and superintendent of various public school systems in the region, has established a scholarship fund in his memory to benefit students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Basham, a native of Shawsville, Va., served as superintendent of schools in Scott and Wise counties in Virginia and in school systems in North Carolina and South Carolina. He was a pioneer of education and held a strong belief in the empowerment of learning.

UVa-Wise to celebrate Black History Month


The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will hold several special events throughout February in celebration of Black History Month.

The events commence on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths with SongFest, featuring performances by Rev. Jake Ravizee, Changed, Ain’t I a Woman?, Heavenly Voices, Rich & Poor Frankie and others. 

On Feb. 12, a soul food dinner will be served in the Smith Dining Commons from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 20 with a dinner, music, lecture and a variety of performances.

UVa-Wise garners LEED certification for buildings


The Hunter J. Smith Dining Commons and Commonwealth Hall, two buildings on The University of Virginia’s College at Wise campus, have received LEED certification for sustainable design by the US Green Building Council.
