Boyce is Mid-South Player of the Week
Deon
Boyce, a UVa-Wise junior, is the Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Player
of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.
The
conference weekly award is Boyce's first of the season and of his career.
Boyce averaged a double-double while helping the Cavaliers to a pair of conference wins last week.
The
Jacksonville, N.C. forward scored 22 points and grabbed 24 rebounds -- his
second straight 24-rebound performance -- in the Cavs' 81-80 double overtime win
over Cumberland. Boyce made 9-of-19 shots from the field while playing 47 of
the 50 minutes.
Boyce's
two 24-rebound games are the most rebounds in a single game in the Mid-South
and second highest in the NAIA this season.
On Saturday, Boyce scored four points while securing a game-high 23 rebounds as UVa-Wise upset No. 1-ranked Cumberlands by 69-54. The win extends Wise's winning streak to a season-high five games.
Boyce
concluded the week averaging 13 points, 23.5 rebounds and three assists per
contest.
Since Boyce's addition during the Christmas break, the Cavs are 3-0 -- all conference wins.
In
his three games this season, Boyce is averaging 13.3 points and 23.7 rebounds
per outing. He is shooting 44.7 percent from the field.
UVa-Wise improves to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-South Conference. The Cavs will put its five game winning streak on the line on Thursday when Georgetown College visits the Prior Center for an 8 p.m. game.
