CEDAR Coal Fair set for April 9-11 in Prior Center

Student projects in seven different categories from across the coalfields will be the focus of the Ninth Annual CEDAR Regional Coal Fair, April 9-11 at the David J. Prior Convocation Center at UVa-Wise.

CEDAR, which stands for Coal Education Development and Resources, is a non-profit program which began in Virginia in August 2005. Annually, CEDAR hosts a regional coal fair and also awards grants to classroom teachers developing coal units in their teaching of natural resources, which correlate to Virginia Standards of Learning.

The regional fair, which opens to the public on April 9 at the convocation center on the campus of UVa-Wise, will feature approximately 500 student projects related to the study of coal in fields including social studies, science, math, music, art, English and technology/multi-media. Projects at the regional fair were winners at their individual school levels.

Cash prizes are awarded to student winners at the regional fair. Levels of competition include kindergarten through fourth grade; fifth through seventh grade; and eighth through 12th grade.

Approximately 1,600 students in the six coalfield counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, Tazewell, Wise and Lee counties took part in this year’s CEDAR program.
