Dennehy named first women's lacrosse coach
Meghan Dennehy has been chosen as the first women's lacrosse coach for The University of Virginia's College at Wise.
Dennehy spent the last six years as a head coach for Queens University in Charlotte, N.C. where she led the team to the conference finals while producing four IWLCA All-America selections during her tenure. As program director, she supported academic excellence with a team that maintaining a 3.0 grade average each season.
Dennehy served as an assistant coach at Queens and Belmont Abbey College. In those roles, she spearheaded recruiting, was responsible for team strength and conditioning and was in charge of monitoring academic progress of student-athletes.
Prior to coaching, Dennehy was a three-time IWCLA All-America honoree at Limestone College. Serving as team captain during her senior season, she led the team to a 13-4 record and a national ranking as Limestone advanced to the NCAA Final Four. During her playing career, she set school records for most goals, draw controls, and ground balls in a season. Dennehy also holds school records for most goals and points in a career.
"I am thankful to be given the opportunity to head up the new women's lacrosse program at UVa-Wise," said Dennehy.
"I would like to thank the entire staff for being extremely supportive and welcoming throughout the hiring process. I am looking forward to building this program from the ground up with all of the fundamentals that come with being a successful lacrosse program both academically and athletically driven by the mission of the College."
A native of Gambrills, Md., Dennehy holds a bachelors degree in fitness and wellness from Limestone College and a masters degree in communications from Queens University.
"UVa-Wise is fortunate to get a coach with Meghan's background and experience," said Danny Sterling, athletics director.
"The opportunities and exciting atmosphere of lacrosse will be an excellent addition to the campus community. We look forward to bringing lacrosse to Southwest Virginia."
UVa-Wise will begin varsity play in the spring of 2015 and will compete in the Mountain East Conference and will be the 13th varsity sport sponsored by the College.
