Homecoming 2012 set for Sept. 27-29 at UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is celebrating its Alumni Homecoming 2012 on Sept. 27-29 with a variety of activities, including a Homecoming football game under the lights at Carl Smith Stadium.
“Lights, Camera, Action!” is the theme of Homecoming this year. Hundreds of alumni from Virginia and beyond return to the campus each year to participate in Homecoming activities. The community is invited to the festivities as well.
The festivities begin a few days earlier on Sept. 24 with the opening of the Alumni Art Show in the Gilliam Center for the Arts at 9:30 a.m. To submit works of art, e-mail Suzanne Adams-Ramsey at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The public is invited to a community picnic and to “Meet the Cavs” at 5 p.m. at the Lawn by the Lake on Thursday, Sept. 27. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the Highland Cavalier athletes and enjoy campus group competitions for the Silver Saber Spirit Award.
Red & Gray Day is set for Sept. 28 and the Class of ’62 Reunion at 11:30 a.m. in the Cantrell Banquet Hall. Charlotte C. Dison, a member of the Class of ’56, will be the featured speaker at the Alumni Lecture Series at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths. The 20th Year Reunion for the Class of ’91, ’92 and ’93 takes place at 6 p.m. in the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center.
On Friday evening, the Colgate Darden Endowed Lecture Series features author Steven Pinker’s lecture on “The Better Angels of Our Nature” at 7 p.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
Homecoming Day takes place on Sept. 29 and is packed full of fun activities for all ages. The SGA Red & Gray 5K begins with registration at 8 a.m. at the Prior Center. The Alumni Family Carnival takes place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lawn by the Lake. The Alumni Leadership in Action 2012 kicks off at 3 p.m. in the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center.
The popular Alumni Picnic gets underway at the Lawn by the Lake at 3 p.m. this year. Alumni, their families, current and retired faculty and staff, students, and friends of UVa-Wise may enjoy good food and time with friends before heading to Carl Smith Stadium to watch the Highland Cavaliers take on Belhaven University at 6 p.m. Tickets to the game are $5 for adults. Admission is free for children, K-12 students and UVa-Wise students, faculty and staff holding a valid ID.
The Alumni Dance is set for 9 p.m. until midnight at The Inn at Norton.
