Jefferson scholar and portrayer to speak at Founder’s Day on April 13

Bill Barker, known worldwide for his portrayals of Thomas Jefferson, will deliver the keynote address on Founder’s Day at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Friday, April 13, at 1 p.m. in the Fred. B. Greear Gymnasium.

Founder’s Day is a celebration of the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of Virginia, who was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell. The public is invited to the event.

Barker has portrayed Thomas Jefferson in a variety of settings over the past 20 years. He first came to Williamsburg in the spring of 1993 to perform as Mr. Jefferson in a film made to honor Ambassador and Mrs. Walter H. Annenberg. He has continued to appear as Mr. Jefferson for Colonial Williamsburg, and assists in the development of Jefferson programs for the Foundation.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Barker’s interest in Mr. Jefferson reaches back to his youth. He enjoys researching the American world Mr. Jefferson knew with an interest in the role the man played and continues to play in our American identity.

He appeared as Mr. Jefferson in programs aired on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN, The History Channel, and C-SPAN. He enjoys historical research, archaeology and traveling.

Barker received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Villanova University and attended the University of Pennsylvania for a brief time. Attracted to the stage at an early age he became a professional actor, director and producer. He was cast as Mr. Jefferson in many different venues including the musical, 1776. Bill is the same height, weight and general appearance as Mr. Jefferson.
