UVa-Wise honors outstanding faculty members

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise recognized faculty achievements during the Second Annual Faculty Awards Luncheon on May 11.

The late David Harrison, one of the University of Virginia’s most generous donors, had a deep appreciation for great teachers and exceptional research. Mr. Harrison, on the recommendation of University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III, devoted a portion of his support to honor faculty at UVa-Wise.

The following UVa-Wise faculty received Harrison Awards:

Scott Bevins received the Outstanding Instructional Support award, which is presented to a faculty member who has provided exceptional service to students and the College with activities that support the academic program.

Robin Woodard received the Mentoring Student Research award, which is presented to the faculty member who fosters the kinds of relationships with undergraduates that result in research appropriate for publication or public presentation.

Michael McNulty received the Outstanding Academic Contribution award, which is presented to faculty members who make a major contribution to enhancing the entire academic program of the College.

Jennifer Wilson received the Outstanding Service award, which is presented to a faculty member making significant contributions to the College and the community.

Narda Porter received the Outstanding Advising award, which is presented to a faculty member who has provided exceptional service to students through advising and related activities that support the academic program.

Tom Goyens and Gretchen Martin each received a Outstanding Research and Publication award, which is earned by a faculty member who has made significant contributions to published research in his or her discipline.

Jacob Somervell received the Rising Star award, which is presented to a faculty member with fewer than five years of full-time teaching experience who exemplifies excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.

Sheila McNulty received the Outstanding Teaching award, which is presented to a faculty member who excels in classroom teaching and works particularly well with students.

George Michael and John Adrian were recognized for being nominated for the State Council for High Education in Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Award.
