Donald Sorah, a music professor at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and his wife Kelly, a middle school choral teacher, are featured on the cover of the January/February 2014 edition of Bicycling Magazine.

The magazine features six significant weight loss accomplishments of readers. The Sorahs lost a combined total of over 260 pounds partially attributable to bicycling. Their accomplishment is noted with a two-page article featuring before and after photos, images of the two riding their bikes at Powell Valley Mountain and motivational tips.

Photographer John Robert Willis traveled from Cincinnati with a crew to the College to work with the magazine’s editor-in-chief and art director to photograph the two in the band room in the Gilliam Center for the Arts and at multiple area locations.

“It all started with a tweet,” Sorah said. “I responded to a tweet from the magazine asking readers how they had reward themselves for reaching a weight loss goal. I replied that once I hit 199 pounds, I was going to start looking for a new bike.”

“Later, I received a call from a magazine representative that requested more details and that Kelly and I submit before and after photos for consideration,” Sorah said. “So, we did.”

In June of 2011, Kelly Sorah had given her husband a hybrid bike hoping to get him involved in exercise.

“I wanted us to do it together,” she says. “I had started using a food tracking app and been running and biking.”

He was reluctant but discovered he enjoyed it.

Kelly Sorah been running races and competing in triathlons. She won her division in the Barberitos Triathlon at Warriors Path Park this September.

“I feel as though there is a resurgence of people in our area getting back to participating in physical activities,” he said. “The support we have had from social media and the College has really helped keep us motivated.”
