Stratton paper exhibit in Gallery 121
A paper exhibit from the Ray Stratton series will be held this month in Gallery 121 of the Gilliam Center for the Arts at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
“What We Have Here Is a Failure to Communicate,” is a collection of works presented on handmade paper by Ray Stratton, a UVa-Wise faculty member. Many of the pieces utilize a specially processed pulp referred to as “over-beaten” or “high-shrinkage." When the pulp is attached to a frame, the paper will dry to a drum like surface.
Utilizing this feature, Stratton has invited UVa-Wise music students to perform at the reception. The students will use selected pieces of artwork to perform a “call and response” percussion piece in keeping with the concept of communication.
The exhibit will open to the public from Feb. 11 until March 1, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. A performance will be held Wed, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
