UVa-Wise Lecture Committee to present Austen’s Powers panel discussion

UVa-Wise will commemorate the milestone anniversary of the printing of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” on Nov. 11 with “Austen’s Powers,” a panel discussion set for 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.

“This year marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of one of the most popular novels in English literature,” Professor Christopher Scalia said of Austen’s popular novel. “To mark the occasion, the UVa-Wise Lecture Committee is sponsoring a panel that will explore some of the reasons why Austen’s novel endures, including its remarkable characters, its ironic tone and its relevance to modern feminism.”

As part of the event, Scalia will present a paper called “A Little Too Ironic: Austen and the Problem of Detachment.” Professor Marla Weitzman will present a paper titled “The Many Faces of Lydia in Pride and Prejudice.” Jordan Begley Powers, a master’s degree candidate at East Tennessee State University will present a paper on “Jane Austen’s Wo(men): Austen’s Heroines and Traditional Femininity.”

The event is free and open to the public. Cultural activity credit is available for the event.
