UVa-Wise MENC Chapter receives recognition

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Chapter of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference was recently recognized for its growth and recruiting efforts.

The UVa-Wise chapter was honored for recruiting and maintaining membership. The National Association for Music Education notified UVa-Wise chapter advisor Richard Galyean of the honor.

Galyean, director of bands, said the UVa-Wise chapter has grown each year since it was formed in 2002. The biggest growth began when UVa-Wise established a music education major in 2007. The chapter now has 15 members, a record number for UVa-Wise.

“Our student members assist music programs in Wise County and the surrounding region,” Galyean said. “Our students helped reestablish the band program in Dickenson County.”

UVa-Wise students attended the Virginia Music Educators Conference recently to report on the chapter’s work with Dickenson County.
