The ROTC program at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is no longer facing closure since the U.S. Army has shelved plans to shut down programs at three Tennessee universities.

Chancellor Donna P. Henry and UVa-Wise ROTC officials made the announcement Friday as UVa-Wise students honored veterans during “Proud to be an American” week.  The UVa-Wise ROTC operates under East Tennessee State University ROTC program. ETSU and programs at two other institutions in Tennessee were slated for closure after the U.S. Army reviewed various programs across the nation. However, Tennessee lawmakers successfully asked the U.S. Army to reconsider. The programs will remain open as the review continues.

“I am pleased to announce that the ROTC program is going to stay at UVa-Wise!” Chancellor Donna P. Henry said. “We received word this week from the Army that the program is not closing. Sgt. Thomas Scholl and Staff Sgt. Brett Rodefer are working to recruit more students, and the program will continue to grow as planned.”
