UVa-Wise Theater Department double feature for the fall
The University of Virginia’s
College at Wise Theater Department will present “Eurydice” and “Of Mice and Men”
this month in the Gilliam Center for the Arts.
Tickets are free for UVa-Wise
students and faculty, and $5 at the door for the community. “Eurydice” is performed on Nov. 2, 8, 10 at 8
p.m., and Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. “Of Mice and
Men” opens Nov. 1 at 8 p.m., then continues Nov 3, 7, 9 at 8 p.m., and Nov 11
at 2 p.m.
The two riveting productions
offer a spirited journey into the bonds of friendship and love with a dark
twist.
“Eurydice” is a theatrical
adaptation of a Greek tragedy about the love between a young couple, Orpheus
and Eurydice, and the challenges they face not only as newlyweds, but also when
the mischievous Lord of the Underworld sets his eyes upon the young bride and
plots to steal her away. Orpheus must
find a way to delve into the Underworld and save Eurydice, but there’s a catch;
Orpheus must lead his wife out without looking back at her. But will Eurydice even want to go back with
him once she reconnects with her late father in the land of the dead?
Joshua Worrell, Caitlin
Stewart, Bernard Manatu, Robert Torres, Heather Marchant, Corbin Nelson, Kellie
Starnes and Ellie Dennis are the cast of the production.
A story of the struggle a
woman faces between the love of her husband and her father, “Eurydice” contains
some material that may not be suitable for children.
Following the Greek tragedy
is a visionary rendition of “Of Mice and
Men,” the classic tale by John Steinbeck with a little less class. The world of Lennie and George has been
turned upside down as the audience finds itself deep in the heart of a women’s
prison, where no rabbit is safe and estrogen is pumping. The traditionally male cast has been swapped
for a cast of women, giving this tale of prejudice and violence a woman’s
touch. Prepare for dense visuals,
complex characters, and high emotions.
Harmony Tripp, Rachel Person,
Morgan Muse, Chey Fender, Al’Lea Day, Morgan Ferrari, Chelsey Spencer, Jessica
Mullins, Forrest Duncan and Anthony Dean are the cast.
Follow the ladies of “Of Mice and Men” on this wild ride as they shatter expectations and push every boundary, assuring the audience an experience it will never forget. Please be advised this production is for mature audiences; there will be strong language, adult themes, and smoking by the characters on stage.
