UVa-Wise and Wise County partner to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the Wise County Sesquicentennial Committee have partnered to launch a four-year project to remember the impact the Civil War had in the region as the nation commemorates the 150th anniversary of the great conflict.

In recognition of Wise County’s unique Civil War experience, the sesquicentennial will focus on “The Civil War in the Mountains.”  Wise County’s location on the Kentucky border resulted in a different set of circumstances for its residents than most of Virginia as battles ranged across the Commonwealth.

The commemoration begins on Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. with a gathering in the Rhododendron room of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center at UVa-Wise.  The program will consist of brief and informative talks by a panel of Civil War scholars.  UVa-Wise history professor Brian D. McKnight, Brian Steel Wills, director of the Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University and Andrew Slap, a professor at East Tennessee State University will discuss topics ranging from prewar regional politics through the Reconstruction period that followed the fighting.

The public is invited to participate in the commemoration.  For more information, call Brian McKnight at 276-376-4574.
