UVa-Wise to celebrate life of Martin Luther King in January

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. with two events in January.

On Monday, Jan. 16, David J. Prior, the college’s chancellor, will be the featured speaker at a 1 p.m. commemoration at the Chapel of All Faiths.  His remarks will be followed by special music by Chris Rose and Anthony Keys.

This event will be followed by the 16th annual Martin Luther King celebration on Monday, Jan. 23.  The Rev. Ray Jones, former pastor of Wise Baptist Church, will be the featured speaker.

The community is invited to participate in the event, which begins with a free dinner at 5 p.m. at the First Church of God in Wise.  A candlelight march from the First Church of God through downtown Wise begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends at the Wise Baptist Church, where the formal program will begin at 7 p.m.

Prior to Jones' remarks, Justin Preston will recite King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and the Mt. Sinai Spirituals from Lynch, Kentucky will perform.  Wise Mayor Erra Sutherland will address the crowd and Ritchie Kennedy and Mark Wooten will provide inspirational music.

Northrop Grumman is providing sponsorship for the events.
