UVa-Wise to host bone marrow donor drive on Nov. 15
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host a bone marrow screening drive on Thursday, Nov. 15.
The drive, sponsored by several departments on campus, will be coordinated by the “Be the Match” organization. The drive will be held in the Dogwood Room of the Slemp Student Center from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The screening drive allows individuals to be registered in the “Be The Match Registry.” At the drive, potential donors will complete registration information to join the registry and then have a cheek swab done to determine the individual’s tissue type. In order to be a member of the registery, potential donors must be between the ages of 18 and 44, and be willing to donate to any patient in need as well as meet the health guidelines outlined by the “Be The Match Registry.”
Across the United States, individuals are battling a variety of diseases and illnesses, including leukemia and other life threatening diseases. These patients often depend on other individuals who are willing to donate bone marrow.
