UVa-Wise to host performance of Frostiana on May 4
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts’ Division of Music at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will present Randall Thompson’s choral masterwork Frostiana in a performance with an orchestra on Friday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gilliam Center for the Arts.
Frostiana, a collection of songs on seven poems by Robert Frost, was commissioned in 1959 by the town of Amherst, Mass, where Frost lived for a time, in commemoration of the town’s bicentennial. Thompson’s songs remain the only poems permitted by the poet and his estate to be set to music.
Thompson received widespread acclaim as a choral composer. His works remain favorites of choirs at all levels. His teaching career spanned appointments at the Curtis Institute of Music, University of Virginia and Harvard University.
The UVa-Wise performance combines the College’s Concert Choir, Highland Chorale, and the Highland Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Cox. The concert is free and open to the public.
