UVa-Wise houses hundreds of RAM volunteers

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is housing 583 Remote Area Medical (RAM) volunteers who provide free medical services to those in need during the annual three-day clinic.

UVa-Wise has been working with RAM for many years. College staff and faculty have volunteered at the event since its inception.

On July 22, the University of Virginia Health System will bring 50 of its 225 RAM volunteers to campus. The rest will arrive on campus on July 23. UVa-Wise will host a total of 583 volunteers on July 23 through July 26.

RAM volunteers from Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, Tennessee, Virginia and Canada will be housed in every available space on campus. UVa-Wise is hosting volunteers from Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, Liberty University, Radford University and East Tennessee State University.

The only branch campus of the University of Virginia, UVa-Wise is ranked among the nation’s top ten public liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report and is home to the Healthy Appalachia Institute (HAI). HAI is coalition of critical thinkers, scholars, system planners and leaders from UVa-Wise, the University of Virginia, the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium, the Southwest Virginia Health Authority and key partners in government, education, business and healthcare. With support from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Virginia Tobacco Commission, this coalition seeks to provide policymakers, healthcare systems, educators, the business community and the region’s citizens the necessary tools, resources, ideas and strategies to foster a healthier population.
