UVa-Wise offers opportunity to experiment with 3D printing
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is opening its 3D printing and technology facilities to the public and area businesses one Monday evening each month beginning April 14 at 6 p.m.
During workshops, also known as Maker Mondays, participants will have the opportunity to discuss, design and create original projects using 3D printers, laser cutters and embedded electronics in the computer science labs on the campus.
“There is a growing movement in open source design and in using advanced technology in DIY projects,” says Alex Edwards professor and Mathematics and Computer Science department chair.
“You don't have to be interested in just science and engineering to be interested in this technology. We currently have some art and business students using the technology. Area high school students recently created a prototype for a project they were working on,” said Edwards.
The College purchased a small 3D printer a few years ago for students to build custom plastic parts for their robotics and artificial intelligence projects.
“We quickly saw the usefulness and bought two more, along with a laser cutter, and a 3D scanner,” said Edwards.
“We are in a position to show people some of the possibilities and we want to make our equipment and expertise available to everyone. We see this type of technology being beneficial to the region in the way it enhances entrepreneurial efforts, encourages exploration and promotes interest in technology and engineering,” said Edwards.
An introductory meeting will be held April 14 at 6 p.m. in the Darden Hall lobby, second floor, on the campus of UVa-Wise and will address art, fashion, product prototyping, wearable technology and custom part creation as possible projects for participants.
Maker Monday workshops are free and participants will need only to purchase materials specific to projects.
