UVa-Wise youth reading program seeking volunteers
The University of Virginia's College at Wise's education department is seeking volunteers to assist as reading tutors for local Wise County elementary students three to four days a week.
"Volunteers can make a tremendous difference in a child's life by assisting those students who are experiencing difficulty grasping reading skills early in their education," said Jeff Cantrell, UVa-Wise education professor.
"By assisting children learn to read, we help not only that child, but we are also impacting the future of our region."
Tutoring sessions last approximately half an hour with some flexible scheduling during normal school hours.
Initial requirements for volunteers include excellent reading skills and enthusiasm for reading. Training and supervision will be provided by Jeff Cantrell.
Volunteers will be required to undergo a background check and must be approved by Wise County Schools. Retirees with flexible schedules are encouraged to apply.
For more information, contact Jeff Cantrell at 276-376-1037 or 276-796-7309 or at email@example.com.
