Governor declares Oct. 26 Napoleon Hill Day

 

Governor Terry McAuliffe has officially designated Oct. 26, 2014 as Napoleon Hill Day in Virginia.

 McAuliffe signed the certificate of recognition earlier this month to commemorate Hill, his body of work, his teachings and his contributions to Virginia and the nation.

Gluten sensitivity workshop offered at SVHEC

 The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Office of Economic Development will offer Gluten Sensitivity & Gluten Free Diet on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, One Partnership Circle, Abingdon, VA.

 

UVa-Wise Red Flag Campaign to raise sexual misconduct awareness

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise kicks off its partnership with 19 Partner Campuses in the Red Flag Campaign on Oct. 19. The campaign is a nationwide program focused on preventing dating violence on college campuses.

CAV-L-CADE of Bands set for Oct. 25 at UVa-Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the Marching Highland Cavaliers will host the third annual CAV-L-CADE of Bands Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014.

Gates will open at 12 p.m. with the contest starting at 2 p.m. at Carl Smith Stadium. Bands from Virginia and Tennessee will compete for a grand prize of $1,000.

Rushin to speak at Napoleon Hill Day on Oct. 27

Retired Chief Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force, Paul R. Rushin, is the featured speaker for the annual Napoleon Hill Day at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, Oct. 27.

O'Donnell to have book signing events during homecoming week

UVa-Wise professor Michael "O'D" O'Donnell wil be signing copies of his new book, "O'D II: Life Lessons, You don't need a reason to help someone," in the Slemp Student Center Atrium, in the Slemp Student Center Atrium, Thursday, Oct. 2, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the UVa-Wise homecoming game beginning at 11 a.m. under the tent near the bookstore outlet.

Dominion Foundation grant jumpstarts research field station

A grant from the Dominion Foundation will jumpstart UVa-Wise’s efforts to convert a campus house to an environmental field station designed to enhance student and faculty research.

 

The $25,000 grant will help the College turn the house, located on what was once called “faculty row” to the field station.

Partisan Rangers Act had unintended consequences, Civil War expert contends

The Confederate Congress approved the 1862 Partisan Rangers Act with the intention to ease the way for more southern men to join the Confederacy’s Civil War efforts, but it quickly got out of control and created many unintended consequences, said Barton A. Myers, a history professor at Washington & Lee University.
