Five receive Tice awards


Five students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise were honored with the Tice Total Achievement Award during the annual Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon on March 22. 

Destiny Baker, Lyndra Frimpong, Dakota Hill, Erin Lee and Elizabeth Sandoz were each presented with a certificate of recognition and a $1,000 award. 

Lonesome Pine Regional Library hosts True Grit Panel Discussion to celebrate The Big Read

Lonesome Pine Regional Library will present a True Grit Panel Discussion on Wednesday, April 9 at 1 p.m. as part of The Big Read celebration. 

Cyber security blogger Brian Krebs to lecture March 20


Brian Krebs, author and cyber security blogger, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on March 20 at 7 p.m. as part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science’s Digital Rebels Speaker Series.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the lecture hall of the Leonard W. Sandridge Science Center.

South-West Insurance continues student support at UVa-Wise



South-West Insurance, a strong supporter of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, recently made another contribution to a scholarship fund that helps student athletes.

The local company established the South-West Insurance Agency Scholarship Fund in 2002 to assist students participating in intercollegiate athletics at UVa-Wise. The scholarship is awarded to students from local schools.

Wise Guys and Bluegrass Band to perform in Luxembourg


Two bands from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will travel to the University of Luxembourg in June to perform at the third annual Transatlantic Dialogue Conference.

The Wise Guys and the Bluegrass Band are featured performers on June 5 at an outdoor stage in the heart of Luxembourg. The trip marks the first time that a group has performed outside of the United States.

UVa-Wise Spring Concert set for March 31



The UVa-Wise Wind Ensemble and the Highland Winds Concert Band will present their annual spring concert on Monday, March 31 in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. 

UVa-Wise to host 'Take Back the Night' event


The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host “Take Back the Night” on Wednesday, March 19, to bring awareness for sexual violence and to support survivors in their healing process.

PRISM Gala, Silent Auction, Concert set for April 19


The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present its 8th annual PRISM Gala, Silent Auction and Concert in April.

The event, which benefits music student scholarships and the UVa-Wise music program, is set for April 19, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Tickets are $35.

Joshua Darden remembered for service to UVa-Wise


Those familiar with the history of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise know the role the Darden family played in the creation of the region’s only four-year state college.

Most have heard how former University of Virginia President Colgate Darden, who was also a former Virginia governor, took notice when three Wise County leaders traveled to Charlottesville in the early 1950s to propose the University establish a branch college in the coalfields.

Simmons establishes scholarship to honor family


As a youngster growing up in Big Stone Gap, Rabern Simmons always knew he would attend The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. 

It was a family tradition, one that his parents, Barry Simmons ’91 and the late Rae Simms ’76, established in the mid 1970s. Simmons’ connection to campus would grow stronger over the years, but it began when the young boy would accompany his parents to various alumni events.
