Upward Bound completes 43rd summer at UVa-Wise
Upward Bound completed its 43rd summer on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Students were offered academic classes to prepare them for Virginia Standards of Learning in subjects that they will take during the coming school year. “Education-Mapping Your Future” was the theme this year. Students who graduated from high school in the spring and are enrolled in college this fall semester were enrolled in two online summer classes for college credit.
All students participated in a work-study program in the afternoon. The students either worked in various offices on or off campus, participated in a photojournalism class to produce the summer magazine or participated in a career development class featuring guest speakers, mock interviews, research papers and field trips to various job sites. They also participated in community service projects at Kid’s Central and Heritage Hall.
In addition to the classes and work-study, the Upward Bound students participated in several activities on and off campus, including trips to the Cooper’s Gem Mine in Blountville, Tenn.; Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va.; Southeast Community College in Cumberland, Ky.; Southeast Culinary & Hospitality College in Bristol, Va.; WCYB in Bristol, Va.; the Kentucky Coal Museum in Lynch, Ky.; and the Barter Theatre in Abingdon to see “The Wizard of Oz.”
