Staff awards presented at UVa-Wise

 
 

Several staff members were recognized during an awards ceremony, June 21, for their many years of service and contributions to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. 

Rhonda Bentley, Rue Gembach, Janie Hamilton and Martha Necessary were recognized for 35 years of service.

Ray Asher, Glenda Hubbard and Bill Statzer were honored for 25 years of service.

Elizabeth Steele Samerdyke selected to participate in advanced placement program reading

Elizabeth Samerdyke, coordinator for Advising, Retention and Assessment at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, was selected for a fifth consecutive year to participate in the College Board’s Annual Advanced Placement Reading.

Each June, advanced placement teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather to evaluate and score free-response sections of the advanced placement exams. During the scoring sessions, more than 12,500 advanced placement readers evaluate 4.2 million exams.

Four UVa-Wise students are conducting research as Summer Scholars

Four students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are spending the summer researching various projects as part of the Summer Scholars Program.

The C. Bascom Slemp Foundation funds the undergraduate research. The funds are specifically provided for undergraduate research that falls outside the natural sciences.

UVa-Wise students are latest HAI Research Fellows


Three students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise were recently named Healthy Appalachia Institute Student Research Fellows.

 

Ash Lawn Opera Company and UVa-Wise Music Division to present Susannah

 

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Music Division in conjunction with the Ash Lawn Opera Company from Charlottesville, Va. will present the opera, Susannah on June 21 at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theater in Gilliam Center for the Arts.

UVa-Wise receives district advertising award

 

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has won a Silver ADDY award at the American Advertising Federation’s District 3 competition for the campaign, ‘Are you UVa-Wise?’

UVa-Wise student killed in I-81 crash

A freshman at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has died in a two-vehicle crash that happened on Tuesday, June 3 on Interstate 81 in Washington County.
 
According to the Virginia State Police, Abenezer D. Thewdros, 19, of Arlington, Va., died at the scene, along with passengers Abel N. Ayele, 19, of Arlington, Va., and Alemu S. Ameha, 25, of Alexandria, Va.
 

Appalachian Writing Project offers summer writing camps

 
 
The Appalachian Writing Project at The University of Virginia's College at Wise is offering five summer writing camps for grades K-12 during the month of June. 
 
The Young Writers Program Summer Writing Camps will be conducted by teacher consultants from the Appalachian Writing Project of UVa-Wise and are sponsored by the Slemp

UVa-Wise professor O'Donnell featured on 'With Good Reason'

Michael O’Donnell, an assistant professor of French with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, recently appeared on 'With Good Reason,' a radio production of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
 
O’Donnell, who has been teaching for nearly five decades, discusses his travels, not being ready for retirement and his own mortality with Kelly Libby, an associate producer for the show.
