UVa-Wise offers innovative technology experiences through summer camps

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise offered two opportunities during summer break for students to sample innovative technology during summer camps.

The camps, both sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, provide access to 3-D printers, robots and other innovative technology in Darden Hall.

Winds of the Mountain Empire to perform at UVa-Wise

The Winds of the Mountain Empire, a wind ensemble in residence at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will present its ninth annual performance in the theater of the Gilliam Center for the Arts on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Sunday, July 20 at 4:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is free.

The 2014 Winds of the Mountain Empire Program will feature the following works:
Star Spangled Banner (arranged by Jack Stamp)
Slava (Leonard Bernstein)
English Folk Song Suite (Ralph Vaughan Williams)
Evensong (James Wardell)

UVa-Wise is now just one step away from becoming a full NCAA Division II member.

Summer Band Camp concert set for July 10

The Division of Music at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will present its Summer Band Camp concert on Thursday, July 10, in the Cantrell Hall Banquet Room.

The concert begins at 6:15 p.m. and will feature high school students from Central High School, Eastside High School and Union High School in Wise County, Clintwood High School in Dickenson County, J.I. Burton High School in Norton and Lee High School in Lee County.

The performance will include selections by Frank Erikson, Ludwig Van Beethoven and other noted composers.

Murray pens book on Gettysburg

It’s not hard to find a banjo in Southwest Virginia, but it can be quiet a feat to locate the traditional mountain music instrument in Luxembourg.

UVa-Wise 2014 FINS Fellows


Several students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are tackling undergraduate research projects as part of the Fellowship in the Natural Sciences program.

The Department of Natural Sciences began the FINS program 12 years ago with the goal of providing opportunities for our students to fully engage in the scientific endeavor in the same manner as professional scientists. 

Staff awards presented at UVa-Wise


Several staff members were recognized during an awards ceremony, June 21, for their many years of service and contributions to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. 

Rhonda Bentley, Rue Gembach, Janie Hamilton and Martha Necessary were recognized for 35 years of service.

Ray Asher, Glenda Hubbard and Bill Statzer were honored for 25 years of service.
