Open House 360 Campus Preview postponed due to inclement weather

 

Due to inclement weather, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is postponing the Open House 360 Campus Preview Day that was set for Saturday, Nov. 1.

 Weather forecasts are predicting a winter storm will hit the region beginning late Friday and in the early hours of Saturday.

Alpha Phi Sigma holds book drive

 

The UVa-Wise chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society, is sponsoring a book drive for inmates at Wallens Ridge State Prison.

 Professor Ashley Dickinson said the students took a recent tour of the prison and took interest in the library. The honor society decided to collect books to stock in the library and in the prison’s many pods.

UVa-Wise students hold vigil for Hannah Graham

More than 100 UVa-Wise students gathered around the campus lake on a chilly Thursday evening to remember University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham and students from other colleges and universities who have been victims of brutal crimes.

Main Street in Wise set to close Nov. 3-5

During the period Monday, Nov. 3 starting at 6 a.m. through Wednesday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., Main Street in Wise from Birchfield Road to Bank Street will be closed for excavation.
 

Poet Sholl is featured speaker at Coffee Night Nov. 11-12

Betsy Sholl, the former poet laureate of Maine, is the featured poet at the fall 2014 Coffee Night at UVa-Wise. The event is sponsored by the departments of Communication Studies and Language and Literature, and the Jimson Weed.

Fun Fall Festival brings youngsters and community to campus

More than 200 children and their families visited the UVa-Wise campus Tuesday, Oct. 28, for the annual Fall Fun Festival, sponsored by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

 The children enjoyed many activities and games and garnered free treats as well. The event featured many Halloween-themed activities and booths, including popcorn and cotton candy.

Theater Department's Renaissance Faire set for Nov. 15 on campus

Student and faculty members of the UVa-Wise theater department are hosting a Renaissance Faire at the Lawn by the Lake on Nov. 15, from 1-4 p.m.

Ely Health & Wellness Center dedicated

 

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise formally dedicated its Winston Ely Health & Wellness Center on Monday, Oct. 27 before a crowd of students, campus officials and the community.

Fall concert set for Nov. 3 in Prior Center

The UVa-Wise Jazz Ensemble and the Highland Winds Concert Band will present their annual fall concert on Monday Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

Appalachian Prosperity Project receives award

 

The Appalachian Prosperity Project, a partnership among the University of Virginia, UVa-Wise, the Virginia Coalfield Coalition, the private sector and the state, was honored this week by Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.
