The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is now a sister institution of the University of Seville following an agreement that creates the possibility of sharing research programs, faculty and students.

“This agreement certainly represents a great opportunity to open the door to another great European university,” said Witold Wolny, field director of international programs at UVa-Wise. “We have a very good experience with another sister institution in Spain, the University of Huelva, where already seven UVa-Wise students spent a semester or whole academic year. It seemed logical to expand our study abroad opportunities in Spanish-speaking countries.”
The University of Seville, founded in 1505, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Spain. The university has 126 departments and 57,000 students, and it offers 68 doctorate programs.
UVa-Wise is the only liberal arts college among the university’s 25 sister institutions in the United States. The agreement stems from a three-week visit to UVa-Wise by a group of Seville teachers in 2001.
“Seville is the artistic, cultural and financial capital of southern Spain,” Wolny said. “It’s difficult to underestimate the benefits of spending a semester studying in this city. It is a challenging academic experience and an exciting cross-cultural immersion in Andalusian folklore, music, history and way of life.”
One of the first exchanges between UVa-Wise and the University of Seville will occur when Encarnacion Sanchez-Lissen, a professor of the department of sciences of education, will soon spend a semester teaching and researching in Wise.
