The University of Virginia’s College at Wise signed a letter of intent for affiliation with the Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Jaunpur, India.

The letter explores the possibility of establishing an institution relationship to enhance opportunities for study abroad and cultural exchange with emphasis in the areas of business, economics, religion and philosophy. Events that may enrich or expand educational and cultural understanding will add to the agreement value.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is the second American institution to begin a relationship with VBS Purvanchal University. The University recently began exchange programs with Oakland University. UVa-Wise has agreements with seven sister institutions in Austria, Germany, UK, Luxembourg, Mexico and two in Spain.

Charlotte Dison featured in fall Alumni Lecture Series

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is continuing its Alumni Lecture Series to bring distinguished alumni to campus to discuss how their college experience influenced their careers.

The public is invited to attend the event.

UVa-Wise to host Lorax event to encourage reading

Spark the inquisitive mind of a child while promoting reading initiatives by spending an afternoon with one of Dr. Seuss’ creations, The Lorax, at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The Lorax will host kids up to 12 years of age for an afternoon of games, activities and crafts on Saturday, Sept. 22, from noon to 3:30 p.m. Participants may come in costume or dressed as they are.

Nash to discuss the Reconstruction Era

 

Steven Nash, a history professor at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn., will lecture at UVa-Wise on Thursday, Sept. 20.

UVa-Wise students graduate with least debt among public liberal arts colleges, according to U.S. News ranking

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is the top public national liberal arts colleges whose students graduate with a low debt load, according to the latest issue of U.S. News and World Report’s annual college guide.

Jimson Weed seeking submissions for fall issue

 

Jimson Weed, a semiannual literary journal of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, is accepting submissions from local writers for the fall 2012 issue.

Those interested in contributing poetry, short stories, creative essays, photography or artwork for Jimson Weed should submit their work by Sept. 17. Submissions may be e-mailed to jimson-weed@uvawise.edu or lwm2d@uvawise.edu. Work may be submitted on disk or hard copy to Zehmer Hall 131.

UVa-Wise welcomes 365 freshmen to campus

UVa-Wise welcomed 365 freshmen and their families to campus Friday, August 17 for "Move In Day." Staff, faculty and Residence Life students gathered early to help to help the new students carry their belongings to their residence hall rooms. Upperclassmen will arrive on Sunday, August 20.

Fall Convocation is set for Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Fred. B. Greear Gymnasium. University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan will address students, faculty and staff. Classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Appalachian Warfare at UVa-Wise offers November Civil War day trip

 

The Appalachian Warfare Program at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is sponsoring a day trip to Camp Wildcat, the Battle of Barbourville and Cumberland Ford on Nov. 17, 2012.

The visit to the Civil War’s “Hidden Jewels” is sponsored by the generous support of the Slemp Foundation.

July 19, 2012 --- WISE- Officials and friends joined The University of Virginia’s College at Wise today to break ground on a long-anticipated project that solidifies the College’s commitment to supporting and encouraging health and wellness on campus and in Southwest Virginia.

The $8.3 million project, made possible by a generous gift from the Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation, will include a new 11,000 square foot addition to the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center’s existing fitness center and the renovation of 5,833 square feet of the Fred B. Greear Gymnasium. The center will house a new exercise area, a multipurpose room for yoga, dance and other activities, two conference rooms for individual and group health advising and instruction, and locker rooms. The center is slated for completion in December 2013.
