Spring Trip: Staunton and Charlottesville
Friday, February 28 – Sunday, March 2. After classes on Friday, we’ll drive to Staunton and spend the next day exploring this quaint nineteenth-century town, known for its fine architecture, eclectic restaurants, specialty shops (esp. books and antiques), and carefully preserved Woodrow Wilson home. In the evening we’ll attend a play at the Blackfriars Theatre, an exact replica of a seventeenth-century London playhouse. On Sunday, we’ll drive to Charlottesville where we will explore the University of Virginia and tour Monticello. We’ll return to Wise early Sunday evening.
Visit to the Carter Fold
The Carter Family Fold is a music venue in nearby Hiltons that is dedicated to the preservation and performance of traditional mountain music. We’ll visit on Saturday, March 21, and see The Hillbilly Gypsies in concert. On the way home we’ll stop by Bojangles for iced tea, biscuits, and chicken (or a suitable vegetarian alternative).
On a Friday night in April (either the 4th or the 11th), we’ll take a Program trip to Hillcrest Lanes in Norton, the bowling epicenter of Wise County.
