Current and past International Students

Here is what a few of our past International Students
have to say about their UVA-Wise experience.

Aysegul Acar

"Istanbul University has an exchange student program with UVA-Wise that lets 2 or 3 Turkish students study here for a year. I applied to it and they selected me. I'm glad they did.  I'm really happy here. This is my first time to be abroad and away from my family. Everyone has been so nice and friendly to me so far. For example, on my first day here, everybody who I didn't know came and said hi to me. I was like why are you saying hi to me you don't even know me!! But now everybody is doing the same thing including me, and I understand the reason why they are acting like that.  It is because they know how to treat people and want to become friends with everybody. Eveybody has helped me so much to get used to life here. Now I have lots of friends who I want to stay friends with forever. I never saw myself as a stranger here, they have always tried their best to make me feel as if I was at home. I have learned how to survive in life by myself, I have learned what the meaning of a real friendship...I used to live in a big city in Turkey and I know Wise is pretty small compared to where I lived, but I think people living here make Wise worth living. Also I believe that I get a better education here, because there are a fewer students in each class. Teachers have enough time to take care of each of us. You can ask them whatever you want to learn that you didn't understand in class or in their lecture and even if they don't have enough time, they make time to help you by making appointments. They are also so open-minded towards international students. I'm glad that UVA-Wise has this program, because it gives students overseas a good opportunity to come the USA, study here and learn American life-style and culture. If you want to have the best experience of your life and learn what the real life is, UVA-Wise is the best place ever...."

" I feel very lucky to be selected as an exhange student and to have the chance to study at UVA-Wise. I had some questions in my mind before I came here because I learned that it is a small college. However, I soon found out that there are so many advantages to studying at a smaller college. The number of students in classes are not that much, classes are not overloaded. Therefore, you can have a better communication with your instructors during the classes and this helps you to understand the topics better. You can also ask about everything you have on your mind. It doesn't have to be in the class time. It also doesn't have to be related about the classes. You can talk to your instructors about different things like events or trends in the world. What you will find out here in your first day is how nice the people are. They are the most friendly and helpful people I have ever seen. Since it is a small college, you can be sure that you are going to be involved in the activities that you want . In a bigger college you will face competition in all of the areas I mentioned, and it will affect what you receive. I am very happy to be here and satisfied with every service that my college provides."
