UVa-Wise to hold chancellor search forums on May 14-15
Alumni and friends of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are invited to attend one of two forums regarding the search for a chancellor for the University of Virginia’s only branch college.
The forums, hosted by the Chancellor Search Committee, are set for May 14 and May 15 at 6 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths on campus.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise recognized the scholastic achievements of nongraduating students during the Academic Awards Ceremony on April 22.

Student forum regarding chancellor search set for May 2 in Cantrell Banquet Hall
UVa-Wise students are invited to a public student forum on Wednesday, May 2, regarding the search for a new chancellor.
The forum is set for 1 p.m. in the Cantrell Banquet Hall. Students are asked to come prepared to express their thoughts on the following two questions:
UVa-Wise to host performance of Frostiana on May 4
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts’ Division of Music at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will present Randall Thompson’s choral masterwork Frostiana in a performance with an orchestra on Friday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gilliam Center for the Arts.
David J. Prior Convocation Center dedicated at UVa-Wise
Marcia Gilliam, chair of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Board, said it best when she addressed the 250 people who gathered on Wednesday, April 25, to officially dedicate a 78,000 square foot arena in honor of the late Chancellor David J. Prior.
“Today, we are here to celebrate a life well-lived, a heart well-loved, in a place that will be well-used,” Gilliam said. “We are here to celebrate David J. Prior and the David J. Prior Convocation Center.”
Wampler to deliver Commencement address at UVa-Wise
William Wampler,
former Virginia senator and senior lecturer in military science at The
University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will deliver the keynote address
during Commencement exercises at UVa-Wise on Saturday, May 19.
State wildlife biologist to present at UVa-Wise on May 2
Johnny
Wills, a terrestrial wildlife biologist with the Virginia Department of Game
and Inland Fisheries, will give a presentation entitled “Black Bear Ecology and
Management on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
The 26th Annual Cavalier Alumni $elebration set for May 5
The 26th Annual Cavalier Alumni
$elebration will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the Lonesome
Pine Country Club.
UVa-Wise chancellor search committee appointed
A 15-member search committee has been named to assist in the selection of the next chancellor at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan appointed the committee. Marcia A. Gilliam, chair of the UVa-Wise Board, will also chair the search committee.
Stewart to discuss moonshining
Bruce Stewart, a history professor
at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, will lecture at UVa-Wise on Friday,
April 27.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Pinker and Grandin to lecture at UVa-Wise in Colgate Darden Lecture Series
Steven
Pinker, a best-selling author and scientist, and Temple Grandin, an animal
scientist who was the subject of an award-winning HBO film have been selected
as the 2012 and 2013 speakers in the Colgate Darden Lecture Series at The
University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
UVa-Wise to dedicate David J. Prior Convocation Center on April 25
The public is invited to attend the dedication of the David J. Prior Convocation Center at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
The $30 million facility, touted as a necessity for Southwest Virginia’s growth, is named in honor of the late David J. Prior, the UVa-Wise chancellor who recognized and promoted the building’s economic development and educational potential.
Wills to kick off election series
Brian Wills, a former
professor at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and current director
of the Center for the Study of the Civil War Era at Kennesaw State University
in Georgia, will lecture at UVa-Wise on Thursday, April 19.
Tipton Memorial Scholarship Fund concert set for April 20 at UVa-Wise
The sixth annual David Tipton Memorial Scholarship Fund Concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20 in The Gilliam Center for the Arts on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
The concert will feature the UVa-Wise Jazz Ensemble and the New Virginians.
The scholarship was established in honor of David Tipton, who served as a band director in the U.S. Army and as band director at Pennington Gap High, Thomas Walker High, Powell Valley High and J. I. Burton High.
Prism Gala set for April 21 at UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present “An American Main Street,” the theme for the Seventh Annual Prism Gala and Auction on April 21 at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
The event will feature various types of Americana music.
Jefferson scholar and portrayer to speak at Founder’s Day on April 13
Bill Barker, known worldwide for his portrayals of Thomas Jefferson, will deliver the keynote address on Founder’s Day at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Friday, April 13, at 1 p.m. in the Fred. B. Greear Gymnasium.
Poet Sholl is featured writer for Coffee Night at UVa-Wise
Betsy Sholl, former poet laureate of Maine, is the featured writer at Coffee Night, a reading and performing event dedicated to the poetry and prose of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and its community.
Sydow is featured speaker for the spring Alumni Lecture Series at UVa-Wise
Debbie L. Sydow, a 1985 graduate of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, is the featured speaker for the spring Alumni Lecture Series at UVa-Wise.
The public is invited to the lecture, which is set for Monday, April 9, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.
Blueprint for Entrepreneurial Growth and Economic Prosperity in Southwest Virginia released
The Blueprint for Entrepreneurial Growth and Economic Prosperity in Southwest Virginia, a community-based initiative designed to promote entrepreneurial activity in the region, has been released.
The Blueprint, supported by the Virginia Coalfield Coalition and Appalachian Ventures, was developed toinspire collective action, impact policy, foster regional networks, build on the region’s remarkable assets and to seek new investment.
