Science students to present at forums
Several science majors from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise were invited to present their research papers at different symposiums in the region.
Grants awarded at Appalachian Prosperity Project Symposium
Four research teams of faculty, students, and community partners were awarded venture grants as part of the first annual Appalachian Prosperity Project Symposium held at the University of Virginia on Friday, April 5, 2013.
Day of Service set for April 13
In conjunction with the celebration of Founder’s Day, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host the 3rd annual Cavalier’s Care: A Day of Service, in memory of three women who were instrumental in the founding of the College—Mary Thompson, Lois Tracy and Jane Knox.

UVa-Wise students honored with Tice Total Achievement Awards
Five students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise were honored with the Tice Total Achievement Award during the College’s 22nd annual Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon on March 23.
Brittni L. Altmann, Jordan D. Cole, Corbin F. Hayslett, Alana R. Parton and Madeline S. Stallard were each presented with a certificate of recognition and a $1,000 award.
‘Phantom of the Opera’ begins April 11 at UVa-Wise
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaption of “Phantom of the Opera” is the spring 2013 production of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Visual and Performing Arts Department.
Webber’s musicalization of the Gaston Leroux novel won the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical and is the longest running show in Broadway history.
PRISM 2013 set for April 27 at UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Department of Visual & Performing Arts is set to present its 8th annual PRISM Gala and Auction.
Coffee Night poetry and prose reading set for April 16
Virginia Poet Laureate Sofia Starnes is the key
speaker at the spring semester’s Coffee Night, a reading and performing event
dedicated to the poetry and prose of The University of Virginia’s College at
Wise and community creative writers.
Astor to discuss Kentucky and Missouri in the Civil War
Aaron Astor, a history professor at Maryville College and an authority on Appalachia’s Civil War, will lecture at UVa-Wise on Friday, March 29.
Astor, an expert on the
borderland region of the Civil War, will speak in the Slemp Student Center’s Dogwood Room at 1 p.m. His lecture, “Rebels on
the Border,” will introduce the audience to the work that has gone into his book.
Scalia to lecture on Walter Scott, March 20
Professor Chris Scalia will present "He Said, She Said: How the Visual Arts Shaped the Novel," on Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m. in the Rhododendron Room of the Slemp Student Center, 5th floor.
UVa-Wise history majors to present papers
Three history
majors from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will travel to
Christopher Newport University on March 23 to present papers at the annual Phi
Alpha Theta Conference.
Ashlee
Childress, a resident of Appalachia, will present a paper on “Medieval
Ethiopian Slavery and Medieval English Serfdom.”
UVa-Wise women compete in 5K Mud Run
Several women from UVa-Wise drove hundreds
of miles to Memphis just to slip, slide, stride and just plain roll around in
the mud, but it was all for a good cause.
The women, Erin Clem, Carlee Reiber,
Brittanie Jones, Sarah Smith and Nichole Davis and Sydney Pack, participated in
the Go Dirty Girl 5K Mud Run, a female only run for ladies of all ages and
athletic abilities.
Entrepreneur Cameron Johnson featured in inaugural lecture series
Cameron Johnson, one of the most successful young entrepreneurs in the
world, will visit The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on April 17 to
discuss ways that college students can pursue their dreams and find success in
tough economic times.
GMEC/AHEC receive grants
The
Graduate Medical Education Consortium and Area Health Education Center of Southwest
Virginia received three grants designed to improve health care in the region.
GMEC/AHEC
garnered a grant to hold an educational event in Geriatric Medicine for rural
practitioners. The event took place at the Appalachian Agency on Aging in
Buchanan County on March 8.
The New Age Exhibit by Jordan Sandidge
A mixed media exhibit from Jordan Sandidge will be held in Gallery 121 of the Gilliam Center for the Arts at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
UVa-Wise to participate in Tornado Preparedness Day on March 12
Gov. Bob McDonnell has proclaimed March 12 as Tornado Preparedness Day.

SVEA to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday March 1 at UVa-Wise
Children are invited to celebrate Dr. Seuss' 109th birthday at The University of Virginia's College at Wise on March 1.
The Student Virginia Education Association at UVa-Wise will host the party for children age 12 or younger in honor of the birthday of beloved children's author Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
The Dr. Seuss Birthday Party will be take place from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Fred B. Greear Gymnasium. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Professor Amy Clark to lecture on 'Talking Appalachian'
Professor Amy Clark will lecture on "Talking Appalachian: Pride and Prejudice and Mountain Speech," on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of a UVa-Wise Lecture Committee's Special Series on Faculty Writing & Research. During the next two months, UVa-Wise will host lectures from members of its faculty who have been making new and original contributions to their fields of study.
Abrams to lecture on female Appalachian learners at UVa-Wise
Erica Abrams, a language and literature professor at The University of North Carolina, will present a lecture based on her new book, “Negotiating a Perilous Empowerment: Appalachian Women’s Literacies,” Friday, March 1 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
This free event will begin at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths and is open to the public.
