UVa-Wise youth reading program seeking volunteers
The University of Virginia's College at Wise's education department is seeking volunteers to assist as reading tutors for local Wise County elementary students three to four days a week.
"Volunteers can make a tremendous difference in a child's life by assisting those students who are experiencing difficulty grasping reading skills early in their education," said Jeff Cantrell, UVa-Wise education professor.
"By assisting children learn to read, we help not only that child, but we are also impacting the future of our region."
Ambassador James Kimonyo to speak at UVa-Wise
James Kimonyo, the ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the United States, will be on campus on Monday, Feb. 25.
Ambassador Kimonyo will deliver a public lecture on the topic of “Rwandan Education” in the Chapel of all Faiths at 1 p.m. WISE DEVELOP is the organizer of the event.
Bowen to discuss the Republicans during the Eisenhower years
Michael Bowen, a history professor
at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, will lecture at
UVa-Wise on Tuesday, March 5.
Noe to discuss the impact of weather on the Civil War
Kenneth Noe, a history professor
at Auburn University and a leading authority on Appalachia’s Civil War, will
lecture at UVa-Wise on Friday, March 1.
Author Welch's book nominated for Library of Virginia award
Wendy
Welch, author of “The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap” has been nominated for
the Library of Virginia's Literary Award in Non-fiction.

The sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma chose an old fashioned yet
proven method to raise some dough to sweeten an established scholarship fund at
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Relay for Life to hold Chocolate Fest on Feb. 14 at UVa-Wise
Chocolate lovers can indulge sweet tooth cravings at Chocolate Fest while supporting Relay for Life, Thursday, Feb. 14 at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.
Participants will have the opportunity to fill a plate with chocolate treats for themselves or a loved one on Valentine’s Day in exchange for a donation.
The Chocolate Fest will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Slemp Center Atrium with all donations benefiting the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

SVEA to hold middle school Valentine’s Day dance
The SVEA Chapter at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise invites middle school students to attend its annual Valentine’s Day Dance on Thursday, Feb. 14.
The event will take place in the Cantrell Hall from 6-8 p.m. The dance is open to middle school students and invites both singles and couples.
Refreshments and Valentine’s Day gifts will be available purchase as will photo booth opportunities sponsored by Theta Phi Alpha sorority.
Stratton paper exhibit in Gallery 121
A paper exhibit from the Ray Stratton series will be held this month in Gallery 121 of the Gilliam Center for the Arts at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
SGA announces scholarship commitment at UVa-Wise
The Student Government Association at The University of
Virginia’s College at Wise pledged to endow a scholarship to benefit the
College’s student leaders.
UVa-Wise to host blood drive Feb. 11
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host a blood drive on Monday, Feb. 11.
Sponsored by the Office of Greek Life and the fraternities and
sororities at UVa-Wise, the drive will benefit the MARSH Regional Blood Bank,
which supplies blood to area hospitals in Southwest Virginia and Northeast
Tennessee. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in Cantrell Banquet
Hall at UVa-Wise.
Black History Month concert rescheduled for Feb. 15
The Black History Month concert has been rescheduled for Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.
The concert will feature the UVa-Wise String Ensemble, Highland Singers, Wise Guys and Chris Rose and Anthony Keys performing the works of many black musicians and composers.
UVa-Wise will celebrate Black History Month with many events throughout February.
Celebration events supporting the theme, “Learning from our Past to Pursue our Future,” extend into the arts, literature and history. All events are open to the public.
UVa-Wise economic development director appointed to Rural Jobs Council
Shannon
Blevins, director of economic development at The University of Virginia’s
College at Wise, has been appointed to serve on Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s
newly created Rural Jobs Council.
