Spring Dean's List at UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has announced its spring
2013 Dean’s List.
The 316 students named to the Dean’s List earned a grade point average
of 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 scale with no grades below a “C” and were enrolled
in at least 12 credit hours.
Three UVa-Wise ROTC graduates are commissioned
Three members of the UVa-Wise Class of 2013 left Commencement on Saturday, May 18, as United States Army officers as the College ROTC program held its second commissioning ceremony.
Mullins overcomes obstacles on way to degree
The normal journey to a
college degree takes four years, but a series of events caused Kimberly Denise
Marshall Mullins to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences
three decades after she graduated high school.
UVa-Wise faculty receive Harrison awards
Several members of The University of
Virginia’s College at Wise faculty were presented with faculty awards
on May 14.
Professors Marla Weitzman and Debra Carter received the Outstanding Teaching Award, presented to
a faculty member who excels in classroom teaching and who works particularly
well with students.
Holcomb is Class of 2013 honorary speaker
Zack Holcomb planned to
become a pharmacist, but a medical mission trip to Belize and a volunteer stint
at a regional free health clinic altered the Big Stone Gap native’s plans.

achievements of nongraduating students during the Academic Awards Ceremony.

The Southwest Virginia Opera Company of The University of
Virginia’s College at Wise announces its upcoming Summer 2013 season featuring
two one-act children’s operas.
Virginia Governor McDonnell is UVa-Wise Commencement speaker
Virginia Governor Bob
McDonnell will deliver the keynote address during Commencement exercises at The
University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. on the Lawn by the Lake.
Highland Cavalier editor awarded SPJ National Mark of Excellence
The editor-in-chief of The University of Virginia's College at Wise student newspaper, The Highland Cavalier, was awarded first place for breaking news reporting in a national journalism contest for a 2012 news story about the sudden death of the College’s seventh chancellor.
Appalachian Writers Project offers scholarships
Thanks to a generous grant from the Slemp Foundation and partnership with Humanities Tennessee, the Appalachian Writing Project will offer tuition scholarships in the amount of $450 for young writers who demonstrate need and want to attend the 2013 Appalachian Young Writer's Workshop.
Southwest Virginia teens grades 10-12 (and new graduates) may be selected to live and write at a residential camp at Lincoln Memorial University, where they will work with notable Appalachian authors. The deadline for applying is May 17, 2013.
UVa-Wise senior selected to Virginia Governor's Fellows program
UVa-Wise senior Phillip Blevins has been named a Virginia Governor’s
Fellow, which means he will spend the summer in Richmond working in the public
safety office for Gov. Bob McDonnell.
Residence halls wireless in fall semester
Residence students at UVa-Wise will have access to wireless
Internet service when the fall semester begins this August.
According to Angela Lemke, housing director, each residence
hall will offer wireless once the campus completes the estimated $200,000 project.
However, the townhouses and the theme houses will continue with independent
service provided by Comcast.

Tipton Memoral Scholarship Fund Concert set for April 29
The seventh annual David Tipton Memorial Scholarship Fund Concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Spring band concert set for April 22
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Division of Music at The University of Virginia's College at Wise will present its annual spring band concert on Monday, April 22, in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

Colyer honored by Highland Cavalier Club
