The Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards, recognizing alumni, former faculty and staff members, and friends of the College who have made significant contributions to their profession, the College, the Alumni Association, our community, State of Virginia and society. Nomination:

Nominations may be made by any person and will be submitted to the Office of Alumni Relations on an official nomination form. No late or incomplete nominations will be accepted. The responsibility for completing nomination materials lies with the nominator(s). However, the Office of Alumni Relations can assist with specific requests for specific information to be added to the nomination.

Nominators determine whether to inform a potential candidate of his or her consideration. The Office of Alumni Relations will make no effort to inform candidates of their candidacy, nor to inform candidates of their failure to be selected for the award.

All nominations received in the Office of Alumni Relations will remain on file for three years. Re-nomination is accepted and encouraged. It is strongly urged to submit supplemental and updated information when re-nominating a candidate who has previously been nominated.

In addition, the Alumni Relations Office staff will solicit names of individuals to be considered for nomination and will retain nomination forms in the office files.

The Office of Alumni Relations will notify award recipients in a timely fashion as to ensure their presence for the presentation of the Alumni Awards.

2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards Description and Criteria

Meritorious Achievement Award

The Meritorious Achievement Award is the most prestigious award presented by the Alumni Association. It recognizes alumni and professors for meritorious service to the College. Eligible candidates must meet the following criteria: be a graduate of the College; and, have received their degree at least twenty-five years prior to their nomination; have served on the faculty of the College; or, be a member of the Alumni Association who attended the college at least twenty-five years prior to their nomination; and, have provided meritorious service to the College. Due to the significance of this award, recipients shall be 50 years of age or older. Because of exceptional accomplishments, the awards selection committee may deem it appropriate to present this award to an individual before the minimum age or time elapsed from the school has been reached. The Meritorious Achievement Award recipient will have a tree planted on campus in their honor and receive an engraved plaque/clock.

Outstanding Alumni Award

The Outstanding Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have achieved substantial professional growth and advancement over an extended period of time, made significant contributions to society and service to fellow man, thus reflecting extraordinary credit to the College. Eligible candidates must meet the following criteria: be a graduate of the College; and, have received their degree at least ten years prior to their nomination or be at least thirty-five years of age. Because of exceptional accomplishments by alumni, the awards selection committee may deem it appropriate to present this award to an individual before the minimum age or time elapsed from the school has been reached. The Outstanding Alumni Award recipient will receive an engraved plaque/clock.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes young alumni who have achieved substantial professional growth and advancement over a short period of time, made significant contributions to the professional world or community, thus reflecting extraordinary credit to the College. Recipients must have graduated within the past ten years prior to the time of the nomination. Because of exceptional accomplishments by young alumni, the awards selection committee may deem it appropriate to present this award to an individual before the minimum age or time elapsed from the school has been reached. The Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipient will receive an engraved plaque/clock.

Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes alumni, former faculty, former employees or devoted friends of the College, who have provided significant service to the College through the Alumni Association, academics, athletics, student services, etc. Eligible candidates must be alumni, former faculty, former employees or devoted friends of the College. The Distinguished Service Award recipient will receive an engraved plaque/clock.

Criteria for Selection:

To qualify for any of these awards, nominee must be a living person and must have been a graduate, faculty member, former employee or devoted friend of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, formerly known as Clinch Valley College. Nominee must have made significant contributions or accomplishments, either personally or professionally, through leadership, community or public service, fostering the growth and development of fundraising efforts, benefitting the promotion of the college, the alumni association, our community, State of Virginia, or society. Contributions of prior years and the immediate past year will be considered. Individuals currently employed by the College, serving on the Alumni Association's Board of Directors, Foundation Board, College Board, or are currently active politicians are not eligible. Based on eligibility of candidates, all, none or only one, of these awards may be presented each year.

Related Definitions:

The word "Alumni" refers to persons who are members of the Alumni Association as stated in Article III of the Alumni Association's Bylaws. Members of the Alumni Association include persons who graduated from the College and former students who have completed one semester or two summer sessions. In addition, the Alumni Board may name persons to Associate and Honorary memberships.

"Faculty" refers to any person who is currently a member of the College's teaching faculty. In addition, Former Faculty refers to any person who has taught a course at the College in the past.

Graduates of the College include any person who has received a two-year certificate degree or four-year degree from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise UVA Wise, formerly known as Clinch Valley College.

Retired Faculty and Faculty Emeritus refer to faculty members of the College who have retired while teaching at the College. Emeritus is an honor conferred to retiring faculty members who have obtained a high rank (with at least 10 years of service and who are at least 45 years of age) and have been nominated by the Chancellor and accepted by the University of Virginia Board for this honor.
