Band festival set for Oct. 19

 

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the Marching Highland Cavaliers will host the second annual CAV-L-CADE of Bands on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.

Gates will open at 1:30 p.m. and the competition begins at 3 p.m. Bands from three states will compete for the prestigious Chancellor's Cup and a $1,000 prize.

Wilkins named Mountain East Conference runner of the week

UVa-Wise men’s cross-country runner Shaquon Wilkins has been named Mountain East Conference runner of the week for his performance at the Golden Eagle Invitational.  Wilkins won the Golden Eagle Invitational with a time of 19:26 in the 6 kilometer event. The time was nearly 30 seconds ahead of the closest competitor.

Welch featured on C-Span's 'Books TV'

Wendy Welch, director of the Graduate Medical Education Consortium of Southwest Virginia, was a featured author at the Southern Festival of the Book, held in Nashville earlier this month.

Welch discussed her work "The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap: a memoir of community, friendship, and the uncommon pleasure of a good book" (St. Martin's Press) on C-Span's Books TV.

Reid to deliver keynote at Napoleon Hill Day

 

Motivational speaker Greg Reid will deliver the keynote address at the annual Napoleon Hill Day on Oct. 28 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Reid is also a noted author published in 30 foreign languages and co-author of the best seller “Three Feet From Gold” with Sharon Lechter and the Napoleon Hill Foundation.

Taste of Home Cooking School set for Prior Center on Nov. 19

 

Culinary specialist Cheryl Cohen will be at the David J. Prior Convocation Center on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Taste of Home Cooking School Show.

Carbon sequestration professor to lecture on Oct. 25

 

Virginia Tech Professor Michael E. Karmis will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Oct. 25 on carbon sequestration.

SVEA's 'Pick a BOO-k' Halloween carnival set for Oct. 26

 

The Student Virginia Education Association's "Pick a BOO-k!" Halloween Carnival takes place on Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon until 2 p.m. in Greear Gymnasium on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The cost is $5 per child, but adults that accompany children are admitted free.The event is for children 12 and under and children must be accompanied by an adult.

UVa-Wise Jazz Ensemble and Highland Winds in concert Oct. 28

The UVa-Wise Jazz Ensemble and Highland Winds annual fall concert will be held in the David J. Prior Convocation Center and will begin at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise joined a nationwide campaign to prevent dating violence on college campuses.  

Coffee Night set for Nov. 7 in Chapel of All Faiths

 

The public is invited to join the Jimson Weed literary journal, the Department of Language and Literature, and the Department of Communication Studies at UVa-Wise on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths for Coffee Night, a reading / performance event dedicated to the poetry and prose of campus and community writers.
