UVa-Wise’s Ewing honored for economic development work

West Virginia University has honored Sim Ewing, vice chancellor for finance and administration at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, with a 2010-2011 Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Recognition Award for his distinguished career in higher education.

The award honors alumni whose lives reflect the commitment and excitement that broadly educated arts and sciences people bring to their civic, cultural and professional lives.

UVa-Wise music recital set for Jan. 27

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise invites the public to the Division of Music Honors Recital on Thursday, Jan. 27.

The free event takes place in the Gilliam Center for the Arts theatre at 7:30 p.m. The recital will feature performances by a select group of students chosen by the music faculty from the Fall 2010 juries.

UVa-Wise to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day with candlelight march on Jan. 17

Bishop James E. Swanson, presiding prelate of the United Methodist Holston Conference, will be the featured speaker during the College’s 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Monday, Jan. 17.

Blood Drive set for Jan. 25 at UVa-Wise

The Office of Greek Life at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, along with fraternities and sororities, will sponsor an indoor blood drive on Tuesday, Jan. 25, from noon until 5 p.m. in the Cantrell Banquet Hall.

Healthy Appalachia Institute designated again as Emerging Institute with the National Network of Public Health Institutes

 The Healthy Appalachia Institute at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has been designated as an Emerging Institute with the National Network of Public Health Institutes for the second consecutive year.
 
The designation includes mentorship by Karen Minyard, executive director of the Georgia Health Policy Center, and participation in both the Emerging Institutes’ collaborative group and the NNPHI’s national conference.
 

Coal Miners Appreciation Day at Feb. 5 hoops matchup at UVa-Wise

Alpha Natural Resources is sponsoring Coal Miners Appreciation Day on Feb. 5 when The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Cavaliers take on the Georgetown College Tigers in a Mid-South Conference basketball matchup in the Fred. B. Greear Gymnasium in Wise.

 

UVa-Wise and Wise County partner to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the Wise County Sesquicentennial Committee have partnered to launch a four-year project to remember the impact the Civil War had in the region as the nation commemorates the 150th anniversary of the great conflict.

Performances, lectures highlight Black History Month at UVa-Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will celebrate Black History Month with several events throughout February.
 
The activities begin on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths when the Highland Singers perform “Precious Lord,” an arrangement written for the memorial of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Wise Guys low brass ensemble will also perform. David Volk will perform a piano arrangement of spirituals.
