UVa-Wise professor McKnight to appear on ‘With Good Reason’ Aug. 24 and 25

Brian D. McKnight, an associate professor of history with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will appear on “With Good Reason,” a radio production of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, on August 24 and 25.

UVa-Wise receives Dominion Foundation grant

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise received a $30,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion, which will provide water quality education opportunities in the city of Norton.

The grant was among $1 million awarded by the foundation to institutions of higher education this year in seven states where Dominion conducts business.

Representatives of UVa-Wise received the award at an Aug. 16 luncheon at the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center that Dominion is building at St Paul.

Move In Day 2011

Freshmen and parents arrived at UVa-Wise early Friday to participate in Move In Day 2011. The freshmen were greeted by a host of resident assistants, Expedition leaders, staff and faculty who helped carry boxes, small refrigerators, teddy bears and other items to the residence halls.Move In Day 2011

The Highland Winds rehearsals begin in August, fall concert in October

The Highland Winds, the college and community concert band at The University of Virginia's College at Wise, will begin rehearsals for the fall semester on Monday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m.

High school students invited to College Night at UVa-Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise invites area high school students to attend College Night on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011.

College Night is held on campus on the fifth floor of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center.  The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. High school students in Wise County and the city of Norton are encouraged to attend.

Welch named assistant editor of Journal of Appalachian Studies

Wendy Welch, an adjunct instructor at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, has been named an assistant editor of the Journal of Appalachian Studies, the official journal of the Appalachian Studies Association.

Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation funds UVa-Wise Health and Wellness Center

Richard and Leslie Gilliam, natives of Southwest Virginia, recently pledged $8.3 million dollars for a new health and wellness center and renovations to Greear Gymnasium to house the Healthy Appalachia Institute at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Glenn Blackburn, a professor of history emeritus and senior scholar with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will appear on “With Good Reason,” a radio production of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, on Sept. 14 and 15.

UVa-Wise receives $185,000 from Slemp Foundation

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise received a $185,000 gift from the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation to support undergraduate research, an innovative opera program and to enhance study of the Civil War’s unique impact on Southwest Virginia.

UVa-Wise and University of Luxembourg seek sister institution relationship

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise signed a letter of intent for an affiliation with the University of Luxembourg to promote the sharing of research programs, faculty and students.
