The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is celebrating its Alumni Homecoming 2011 on Sept. 22-24 with a variety of activities, including the first Homecoming football game under the lights at Carl Smith Stadium.
“Cavs Shine at Night” is the theme of homecoming this year. Hundreds of alumni from Virginia and beyond return to the campus each year to participate in Homecoming activities. The community is invited to the festivities as well.
William H. (Bill) Starnes, Jr. and Sofia M. Starnes of Williamsburg, Virginia, have established an endowed scholarship at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise to benefit an entering freshman each year who has graduated from Thomas Walker High School.
The UVa-Wise Student Government Association and the Student Activities Board are hosting the first concert in the new Convocation Center on Oct. 4.
The University of Virginia College at Wise junior defensive back Marcus Bratton's game-winning punt return and miraculous lateral against Emory & Henry on Sept. 17 is nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced today. Each week, fans vote for the GEICO Play of the Year and the winner will be announced on GEICO Best of College Football 2011 on CBS Nov. 25 at 1:30 p.m.
Robert J. Clemens, vice president of corporate technology at Eastman Chemical Company, will deliver a lecture entitled “Want Jobs? Make Something! Manufacturing and the U.S. Economy” at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 1 p.m. on Oct. 5 in the Science Center lecture hall. The lecture is a cultural credit activity.
The Faculty Research Support Group and the Gender Issues Committee will present a lecture on Oct. 7 by Professor Mehl Penrose on the topic “The Anxieties of Masculinity Inscribed in Enlightenment Spanish Literature.”
The talk is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the small dining room in the Smith Dining Commons.
The American Association of University Women and The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host a “Dress for Success” event at the Chapel of All Faiths on Monday, Oct. 17 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The high tea event is designed to help young women learn the value of obtaining a college degree and prepare for a successful career. A fashion show, free refreshments and door prizes are included in the event.
The Marching Highland Cavaliers of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host autistic children and their families at the Oct. 8 football game at Carl Smith Stadium in Wise.
The University of Virginia's College at Wise will officially cut the ribbon on its new $30 million Convocation Center on Monday, Oct. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the event, which will take place outside the Convocation Center. The new facility is located adjacent to Carl Smith Stadium.
Delegate Terry Kilgore and other state and local lawmakers will join UVa-Wise and University of Virginia officials for the ceremony. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the Convocation Center.
