UVa-Wise announces fall Dean’s List
The fall 2011 Dean’s List at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise includes 323 students.
Students named to the Dean’s List must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale with no grades below “C-“ and must carry an academic load of at least 12 credit hours.
UVa-Wise names Science Center after Leonard Sandridge
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Board approved Chancellor David J. Prior’s recommendation to name the renovated Science Center after Leonard W. Sandridge, the University’s former chief operating officer and a longtime supporter and friend of the college.
The UVa-Wise Board approved the measure naming the facility the Leonard W. Sandridge Science Center on Dec. 9, 2011.
College financial aid assistance offered at UVa-Wise during Super Saturday
The Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (VASFAA), in conjunction with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will host Super Saturday on Feb. 4, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Smiddy Hall.
Virginia Students to speak live with International Space Station astronauts

Highlands Winds rehearsals begin Jan. 30 at UVa-Wise
The Highland Winds, the college and community concert band at The University of Virginia's College at Wise, will begin rehearsals for the spring semester on Monday Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Gilliam Center for the Arts.

More than 4,000 students from Wise County and Southwest Virginia packed the Convocation Center at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Thursday morning to talk live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
Performances, lectures highlight Black History Month at UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will hold several special events throughout February in celebration of Black History Month.
The events commence on Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths. The UVa-Wise Department of Visual and Performing Arts will kick off the activities with a musical performance.
On Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. , a panel discussion on civil rights will take place in the Chapel of All Faiths. Brian D. McKnight, associate professor of history at UVa-Wise, will act as moderator for the discussion. Participants in the discussion include Tom Costa, chair of the history department at UVa-Wise; Dr. Khalid J. Awan, an ophthalmologist practicing in Norton, VA; Elwood Watson, professor of history and African-American Studies at East Tennessee State University; and Chancellor Emeritus Joseph C. Smiddy of UVa-Wise.
On Feb. 10, William H. Turner, distinguished professor of Appalachian Studies at Berea College, will present a lecture titled “History of African-Americans in Appalachia” at 1 p.m. in the Dogwood Room of the Slemp Student Center.
On Feb. 14, Pro-Art presents L’Tanya Mari’, a critically acclaimed jazz vocalist and creative arranger. Her vocal command, soaring voice, impeccable intonation, clear articulation and delivery have solidified her as a commanding force in the jazz vocal genre. Her 2009 recording “A Teardrop of Sun” received wide airplay and climbed to number 30 on the American Jazz Charts. This event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.
