Lonesome Pine Community Fund donates $25,000 to UVa-Wise for nurse training software
Nursing students at The University of Virginia-Wise will receive beneficial training in real-life clinical scenarios through a donation from the Lonesome Pine Community Fund.
The donation will enable the college to buy software that will foster critical thinking for students. Not only will students benefit, but the college has agreed to share this software with nurses in Wellmont’s Mountain Region in Southwest Virginia.
Representatives of Wellmont Health System presented a check to college officials at a ceremony Thursday, Feb. 16, in Smiddy Hall.

Special 'Impromptu' art exhibit in Gallery 121 until March 9
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at The University of Virginia's College at Wise will host the exhibit IMPROMPTU REVIEW/PREVIEW from Feb. 28 – March 9, 2012 in Gallery 121 of the Gilliam Center for the Arts.
The collection is "an eclectic exhibition of works in progress and retrospect." Everyone is encouraged to drop by Gallery 121 and see the works in progress by the art faculty and art majors at UVa-Wise.
Normal gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. To 9 p.m.
Telehealth nursing symposium set for March 31 at UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Department of Nursing and the Healthy Appalachia Institute will hold a rural telehealth symposium on March 31 on the UVa-Wise campus.
The “Symposium to Advance Rural Telehealth Nursing,” also sponsored by Verizon and the Appalachian Prosperity Project, will feature a variety of sessions designed to explore the nurse’s role in telemedicine and how the technology is being used successfully in the region.
President Sullivan to hold town hall meeting on March 7 at UVa-Wise
Teresa Sullivan, President of the University of Virginia, will hold a town hall meeting on March 7 in the UVa-Wise Convocation Center at 1 p.m. to discuss the search for a chancellor for the University’s only branch college.
Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday at UVa-Wise, March 8
Children are invited to celebrate Dr. Seuss' 108th birthday at The University of Virginia's College at Wise on March 8.
The event was postponed earlier this month due to inclement weather.
UVa-Wise recognized by CASE for media plan
The Southeast District Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) recently recognized The University of Virginia’s College at Wise with its Special Merit Award in the Media Relations category.
The award recognized the college’s media plan regarding the opening of its new Convocation Center.
President Sullivan outlines chancellor search process and confirms college leadership roles
The senior staff at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will continue to lead the college as the search for a new chancellor gets underway, Teresa Sullivan, president of the University of Virginia said in a March 7 town hall meeting on campus.
American chestnuts planted at UVa-Wise
Dozens of volunteers gathered at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Saturday, March 10, to work on a project to restore the American chestnut tree to the Appalachian region.
The project also gives UVa-Wise an outdoor classroom area so its students may monitor the tree growth on land that was once surface mined.
Welch featured on 'With Good Reason' in March
Wendy Welch, a faculty member with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will appear on “With Good Reason,” a radio production of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, on March 21.
Welch will discuss her upcoming book “The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap: a memoir of friendship, community and the uncommon pleasure of a good book.”
