First Bank & Trust Company endows scholarship at UVa-Wise
First Bank & Trust Company, a strong supporter of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, has provided the College with $25,000 to create an endowed scholarship fund to help qualified students pursue a college education.
Volk and Burke featured on ‘With Good Reason’ on July 18
Professor David Volk, an associate professor of music with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and Amber Burke, an adjunct instructor at the college, will appear on “With Good Reason,” a radio production of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, on July 18.
UVa-Wise sets July 19 groundbreaking for health and wellness center
The University
of Virginia’s College at Wise will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its
health and wellness center on Thursday, July 19, at 1 p.m.
The ceremony
will be held on the lawn adjacent to Bowers-Sturgill Hall.
UVa-Wise approved for NCAA membership process
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has
been approved for the first step of a three-year process for membership in the
NCAA Division II.
Officials at The University of Virginia’s College
at Wise learned Friday that the school has been granted into candidacy year one
membership of NCAA Division II.
Winds of the Mountain Empire to perform July 22 at UVa-Wise
The Winds of the Mountain Empire, a wind ensemble in residence at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will present its seventh annual performance in the theater of the Gilliam Center for the Arts on the campus on Sunday, July 22 at 4 p.m. Admission to the concert is free.
The Winds of the Mountain Empire, founded by conductor Donald Sorah in 2006, is a professional wind ensemble comprised of musicians from the Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, and Southeast Kentucky regions that convenes each July for performance.

July 19, 2012 --- WISE- Officials and friends joined The University of Virginia’s College at Wise today to break ground on a long-anticipated project that solidifies the College’s commitment to supporting and encouraging health and wellness on campus and in Southwest Virginia.
The $8.3 million project, made possible by a generous gift from the Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation, will include a new 11,000 square foot addition to the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center’s existing fitness center and the renovation of 5,833 square feet of the Fred B. Greear Gymnasium. The center will house a new exercise area, a multipurpose room for yoga, dance and other activities, two conference rooms for individual and group health advising and instruction, and locker rooms. The center is slated for completion in December 2013.
Symphony of the Mountains concert set for July 28 at UVa-Wise
A free sunset pops concert by Symphony of the Mountains will be held at UVa-Wise on Saturday, July 28 at the Lawn by the Lake
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
The event is sponsored by the Marcia and Marvin Gilliam Foundation, Pro-Art and UVa-Wise.
John C. Buchanan Professorship in Biology endowed at UVa-Wise
A generous $1 million gift from the
estate of Carol Phipps Buchanan has created an endowed professorship in biology
at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

with Fall Convocation, set for Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Fred. B. Greear
Gymnasium.
Appalachian Warfare at UVa-Wise offers November Civil War day trip
The
Appalachian Warfare Program at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is
sponsoring a day trip to Camp Wildcat, the Battle of Barbourville and Cumberland
Ford on Nov. 17, 2012.
The visit to the Civil War’s “Hidden Jewels” is sponsored by the generous support of the
