UVa-Wise professor to present film noir lecture as part of the Big Read

Clips from the movie “The Maltese Falcon” will be shown as part of a lecture on film noir presented by Roman Zylawy, professor of French, at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, April 7, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is given in conjunction with the Lonesome Pine Regional Library’s Big Read program.

Often called the first private detective novel, “The Maltese Falcon” introduced the world to Sam Spade in 1930 and chronicled his search for the titular treasure amid a murder mystery. The 1941 film based on the novel is a prime example of the film noir genre starring Humphrey Bogart.

The Lonesome Pine Library is one of 127 organizations throughout the nation to receive the National Endowment for the Arts grant. Grantees represent 38 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The NEA launched the Big Read nationally in 2007 in partnership with the institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest.

The Big Read helps promote the joy of reading in communities across the nation.
