Women invited to ‘Dress for Success’ at UVa-Wise April 20

The American Association of University Women and The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host a “Dress for Success” event at the Lila Vicars Smith House on Monday, April 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The event is designed to help young women learn the value of obtaining a college degree and prepare for a successful career. A fashion show, guest speakers, free refreshments and door prizes are included in the event.

Marcia Gilliam, a businesswoman and member of the UVa-Wise Board, and Julia McAfee, a Norton attorney, are the guest speakers.

Gilliam, president of CSE Financial Services, Inc., graduated from the College in 1982. The Norton native graduated magna cum laude with a degree in business and public administration while working full time and participating in a variety of campus organizations, including the Student Government Association and Lady Cavaliers tennis team. Gilliam has been a member of the UVa-Wise Board since 2003.

McAfee, a certified public accountant, is an associate attorney with Carl McAfee, P.C. She concentrates her law practice in the areas of commercial contracts, personal injury and medical malpractice. She is corporate counsel for JAD Coal Co. Inc., and is licensed to practice law in all state and federal courts in Virginia and Kentucky.

AAUW, the Office of the Chancellor, Career Services and the Office of Student Activities sponsor the event. Career Services and The Glass Slipper in Norton are sponsors of the fashion show.

Students may sign up for the event, which is counted as a cultural activity, outside of the Office of Student Activities on the third floor of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center or by contacting Josh Justice at 276-376-4514 or Teresa Adkins at 276-328-0175.
