Davidson receives 2009 Kanto Award

Richard Davidson, professor emeritus of education at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, is the recipient of the 2009 William P. Kanto Memorial Award in recognition of his strong support for education in Southwest Virginia.

Richard DavidsonThe award was presented Oct. 8 during the annual Forum on Education at UVa-Wise.

Davidson, a veteran educator, has served in various capacities in education, including stints as a school counselor and teacher in Florida, Kentucky and Virginia. In 1965, Davidson began his career as an education professor at UVa-Wise, serving as director of Upward Bound, chair of the Department of Education, dean of students and athletic director. His final posting at UVa-Wise was as director of the Center for Teaching Excellence.

Named in honor of William P. Kanto, a former Norton City manager and founder of the LENOWISCO Planning District Commission, the Kanto Award is presented annually to a local citizen who has contributed significantly to the betterment of education in Wise County and Norton. A member of the Norton City School Board for 25 years, Kanto was also instrumental in the establishment of both UVa-Wise and Mountain Empire Community College.
