UVa-Wise is declared St. Paul’s ‘Hometown College’

The St. Paul Town Council unanimously approved a resolution making The University of Virginia’s College at Wise St. Paul’s “Hometown College.”

The resolution indicates that UVa-Wise has provided higher education for generations of students who would have otherwise faced multiple hardships in their efforts to obtain college degrees. This opportunity has allowed many to remain in Southwest Virginia as productive and accomplished citizens.

The graduates who left the region after obtaining a degree from UVa-Wise often return to the area or provide support through scholarships so that other students can finish their college educations, the resolution says. According to the resolution, signed by Mayor Kyle Fletcher, all UVa-Wise graduates bring recognition and pride to their hometowns through successful endeavors.

“UVa-Wise is our hometown college,” Fletcher said. “It is our college of choice. UVa-Wise is an outstanding college and we take pride it its successes.”

The resolution was approved unanimously on Aug. 17.

“We are deeply honored to be St. Paul’s Hometown College,” UVa-Wise Chancellor David J. Prior said. “It is gratifying that Mayor Fletcher and the Town Council chose to acknowledge the College and our graduates for carrying out our mission to make higher education accessible for residents of Southwest Virginia and beyond.”
