Alumni-Homecoming Weekend Sept. 21-23

Alumni-Homecoming Weekend 2006 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is set for Sept. 21-23 and the community is invited to join in the celebration.

The theme for this year’s event is “All roads lead back to UVa-Wise” and hundreds of alumni from across Virginia and beyond are expected to take to the highways and head home for the action-packed weekend. 

A complete schedule of Alumni-Homecoming events follows:

The community is invited to join alumni, faculty, staff and students for a “Luau by the Lake” on Thursday, Sept. 21. The fun begins at 4:30 p.m. with a delicious meal free to all. Entertainment will include performances by the UVa-Wise Cheerleaders, the Cavalettes dance team, and the Marching Highland Cavaliers Band. The popular crazy boat race begins at 5 p.m.

The Alumni Art Exhibit ’06, located in the lobby of the Theatre Building, will be on display Thursday, Sept. 21 through Thursday, Oct. 12. The public is invited to attend the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. Alumni wishing to participate in the exhibit are invited to submit 2-D and 3-D works of art (three pieces maximum). Works will be accepted at Alumni Hall through Monday, Sept. 18. Friday, Sept. 22 is “Red and Gray Day.” The community is invited to wear UVa-Wise colors to support the Highland Cavaliers. 

At 6 p.m., graduates from the Classes of ’85, ’86 & ’87 are invited to attend a reunion dinner sponsored by UVa-Wise and the Alumni Association. Call Valerie Lawson in the Alumni Office at 276-328-0128 to RSVP.

Saturday, Sept. 23, is filled with a variety of activities including the Alumni Picnic Luncheon, which is open to all alumni and their families, as well as faculty, staff, students and other friends of the College. The picnic begins at 11 a.m. at the Lawn by the Lake. Chancellor Emeritus Joseph C. “Papa Joe” Smiddy and the UVa-Wise Jazz Ensemble will provide musical entertainment during the event.

UVa-Wise alumni and other Homecoming participants can help the less fortunate by donating to the effort being led by the UVa-Wise golf team. The golf team will be collecting personal hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and household cleaning items and detergent to benefit the Advocate Center of Norton. At 1:30 p.m., the UVa-Wise Highland Cavaliers take on Cumberland University at Carl Smith Stadium.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students. UVa-Wise students will be admitted free with a valid ID.

After the game, alumni are invited to a post-game reception at Alumni Hall featuring entertainment by the UVa-Wise Jazz Trio.  The event is hosted by Chancellor David Prior and Mrs. Merry Lu Prior.
