Roberts to speak on the Totalitarian Movement on Nov. 7
Professor David Roberts will speak on “Rethinking the Totalitarian Movement in Twentieth Century Europe” on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel.
Roberts will discuss why Italian Fascism, German Nazism and Soviet Stalinism emerged roughly at the same time, defying the liberal democratic mainstream. He will also ask fresh questions about the lessons to be learned from this troubling layer in our historical experience.
This lecture is based upon Roberts’ recent book, “The Totalitarian Experiment in Twentieth Century Europe: Understanding the Poverty of Great Politics.”
Roberts is the Albert Berry Saye Professor of History, Emeritus, at The University of Georgia. He is author of numerous book reviews, articles and eight scholarly books, including “Historicism and Fascism in Modern Italy” (a collection of old and new essays, 2007) and “Nothing But History: Reconstruction and Extremity After Metaphysics” (reprint edition, 2007). He also co-authored, along with Thomas F. X. Nobel et al., “Western Civilization: The Continuing Experiment,” a textbook used on many campuses. He holds a doctorate of history from the University of California, Berkeley.
