Alumni welcomed to UVa-Wise for Homecoming Sept. 20-22

Alumni Homecoming Weekend 2007 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is set for Sept. 20-22, and the community is invited to join in the celebration.

“Paint the Town Red” is the theme for this year’s event. Hundreds of alumni from across Virginia and beyond are expected to return for the homecoming weekend.

A complete schedule of Alumni Homecoming events follows:

Thursday’s festivities will begin at 4 p.m. at the Lawn by the Lake for the annual crazy boat decorating contest. Immediately following the crazy boat contest, the community is invited to join alumni, faculty, staff and students for a “Luau” at the Intramural Field at Carl Smith Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 4:30 p.m. The luau will include performances by DJ Ben Mays, the Marching Highland Cavalier Band and the UVa-Wise cheerleaders. The event is free and open to the public.

Graduates of the class of 1957 will have the opportunity to reminisce at the 50th year reunion class luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at Alumni Hall. The event is sponsored by the UVa-Wise Alumni Association. To RSVP, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 276-328-0128.

The UVa-Wise community will “Get Fired Up” at a pep rally sponsored by the Student Government Association at 1 p.m. on Friday. The event will be held outside the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center in the Amphitheatre.

Friday’s activities will culminate with a cluster reunion for the classes of ’76, ’77 and ’78. The reunion will begin at 6 p.m. in the Dogwood Room on the fifth floor of the Student Center. The UVa-Wise Alumni Association sponsors the event. To RSVP, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 276-328-0128.

Homecoming Day events will kick off with an inaugural event sponsored by the UVa-Wise TRIO programs, Upward Bound and Student Support Services. The TRIO reception will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Betty J. Gilliam Sculpture Garden in the upper portion of campus. All TRIO alumni and their families are invited to the event. The Alumni picnic, open to all alumni and their families, faculty, staff, students and other friends of the College, will begin at 11 a.m. on the Intramural Field at Carl Smith Stadium. Entertainment will be provided by the band Big Red Rug.

Alumni tailgating will begin at noon in the upper parking lot of the Carl Smith Stadium.

The UVa-Wise Highland Cavaliers will take on Georgetown at Carl Smith Stadium. Game time is 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for K-12 students, and admission is free for other children and current UVa-Wise students holding a valid ID.

The Post-game Alumni Reception and Art Show will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall. The art exhibit is open to all alumni. Each alumnus is encouraged to submit three works of art to be delivered to Alumni Hall, Sept. 17-20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To register for the Alumni Art Show, contact Harry Boone at hwb2e@uvawise.edu or 276-376-4507.
