Noted Civil War historian to Lecture at Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center

A noted Civil War historian will examine General William T. Sherman's infamous march to the sea during a free public lecture at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon.
Mark Grimsley, a professor of American military history at Ohio State University, will discuss " 'Thieves, Murderers, Trespassers': The Mythology of Sherman's March," during the lecture set to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7. Grimsley is the guest of The University of Virginia's College at Wise, a partner in the SWVA Higher Education Center.
The author of The Hard Hand of War: Union Military Policy Toward Southern Civilians, 1861-1865, Grimsley received the Lincoln Prize for the best book on the Civil War published in 1995. Grimsley has written numerous articles about Civil War characters and events and recently co-edited The Union Must Stand: The Civil War Diary of John Quincy Adams Campbell, Fifth Iowa Volunteers.
The recipient of Ohio State University's two highest awards for teaching excellence, Grimsley earned his Ph.D. in history from Ohio State and his master's degree in war studies from Kings College in London.
